Part II Chapter 3-6

This chapter shows Winston’s personality change even further. It seems that he is caught up in his love affair with Julia, and that consumes most of his thoughts. He becomes more and more rebellious, eventually renting a secret room for the both of them to enjoy each other’s company. During one part, Winston looks in to a crystal paperweight and wishes that he and Julia could live happily ever after in it. “The paperweight was the room he was in, and the coral was Julia’s life and his own, fixed in a sort of eternity at the heart of the crystal.” (pg 154) This reminds me of when children want to live in the oversized Christmas globes that you can buy at Costco. The fact that Winston has these thoughts proves that he is losing control of what is ‘right’ and is now living in some fantasy world. This cannot be good for him, especially with the thought police lurking around everywhere.

For now Winston the new room seems like it is to be as safe haven where both Julia and Winston are protected from all of Big Brother’s rules. “So long as they were actually in this room they both felt, no harm could come to them. Getting there was difficult and dangerous, but the room itself was sanctuary.” (Pg 158) However, we all know that no such place like this in Oceania exists. Ironically, there is a rat in their room. “A rat. I saw him stick his beastly nose out of the wainscoting. There’s a hole down there. I gave him a good fright, anyway. Rats! Murmured Winston. In this room! They’re all over the place, said Julia.” (Pg 151) A rat usually represents betrayal. In this story a rat could also symbolize Big Brother. Winston is surprised that a rat was in their room, this means that Winston doesn’t think that Big Brother could be in this room. However, Julia reminds him that rats are everywhere, just like Big Brother is everywhere. Winston chooses to overlook the fact that there is rat in the room; he tires to scare it away. He doesn’t let it bother him. The rat in the room could foreshadow that someone is going to tell on Winston.

I liked your ideas and how you talked about the glass paper weight and the comparison to the Christmas globe that kids like. I thought that was really cool.

Your blog is good but you don't have an intro or conclusion. Otherwise just double check you’re writing.

I liked your ideas in the second paragraph. As we soon find out the rat is foreshadowing of what is to come. Your work was missing a grabber and your ideas seemed random.
